An Afternoon in Annecy, France: Counts, Pizza, a River and an Overlook

Located about 1 hour southwest of Geneva, Switzerland, Annecy, France, is the perfect place to spend a few hours. Here’s everything you need to know to spend the afternoon in Annecy.

Home to the Count of Geneva from the 10th century, Annecy didn’t become a part of France until 1860. Today, the count’s house remains, along with many buildings from that time period. The town of Annecy sists on the north end of Lake Annecy, along the banks of the Thiou River. The Vielle Ville (old town) is a quaint village with cobbled streets and pastel houses. There are dozens of restaurants, shops, patisseries, gelaterias and more, spread throughout this area, making it a perfect place for a leisurely afternoon.

We started our day at Sapaudia, an outstanding wood oven pizzeria that was outstanding. The staff were extremely kind, it was reasonably priced and the pizzas were the best we’ve ever had (even after visiting Italy!) It was the perfect spot for our family and I highly recommend it.

Be sure to walk up to the Chateau d’Annecy – the former Count’s home – which overlooks the city. From here, there are incredible views of the city and its rooftops. The Chateau now houses a museum of regional artifacts.

One of the most picturesque areas of town is the Palais de l’Isle. The palace sits on a triangular inlet in the Thiou River. The house was originally built in the 12th century. Over time, this historic building has served as a prison, a courthouse and an administrative building.
