If you are visiting Billund, do yourself a favor and take a drive out to Brande, Denmark. Just 25 minutes north, Brande is a cute Danish town with regular festivals and a penchant for art. In fact, there are dozens of murals painted throughout the downtown area and each summer they host an International Street Art Festival.
By pure luck, we happened to visit on a night that a DJ was spinning tunes on a stage set up right in the main plaza. We easily found parking on the street and walked up, surprised to see the plaza packed with dining tables, temporary bars and revelry all around. Luckily, we found a free table at a restaurant right on the plaza and enjoyed dining alfresco to the sounds of America’s greatest hits.
After dinner we strolled through the town and found street art on every corner. From abstract pieces to detailed paintings of people, it was a treat to walk along and enjoy the view.

We even stumbled along the town’s playground located by the school. It was a perfect opportunity to play and burn off our dinner.
It was a surprise to us to find that the stores downtown almost all closed at 5 pm and not long afterward the DJ packed up and the revelers began to head home. This was especially surprising since the sun did not set until we’ll past 10, but we had plenty of time to enjoy the art before we headed back.

Brande, Denmark is about 30 minutes from Legoland Billund and the Lego House. It’s also not far from Jelling, the original home of Viking Kings and a UNESCO Heritage Site.
